DC comics announced today what has only been rumored for a few years…that there will in fact be a prequel to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ comic “Watchmen” set to be released THIS summer.
Now, not only will this be a prequel but its going to be a series of prequels. Each character will get his or her own special series. Here’s what DC has lined up:
RORSCHACH (4 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: Lee Bermejo
MINUTEMEN (6 issues) – Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke
COMEDIAN (6 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: J.G. Jones
DR. MANHATTAN (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artist: Adam Hughes
NITE OWL (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artists: Andy and Joe Kubert
OZYMANDIAS (6 issues) – Writer: Len Wein. Artist: Jae Lee
SILK SPECTRE (4 issues) – Writer: Darwyn Cooke. Artist: Amanda Conner
And look at the talent that they’ve lined up! Man, DC really wants this series to be fucking amazing…When was the last time Adam Hughes did actual comic work? I know that he’s been doing covers but never anything story wise in some time.
I’ll tell you I am definitely mixed on this one here. When I woke up this morning and saw what DC was unveiling my first was “No fucking way…”
I mean how? Why?
Do we really need a prequel series? Moore and Gibbons did an amazing job with that series. Which is why after what? Twenty years dince the series came out they’re making movies and cartoon DVDs about it? I never felt after reading it “Hey, I wish I knew more about that world and the characters.” That series gave you all you needed to know! Why do we need more content, create something different! Even Alan Moore has said “As far as I know […] there weren’t that many prequels or sequels to Moby-Dick.”
Ok, Watchmen is not Moby Dick and that a douche comment BUT it is very important to the comic genre.
And he told the NY Times: “I tend to take this latest development as a kind of eager confirmation that they are still apparently dependent on ideas that I had 25 years ago.”
Bingo, Alan. DC do you really need to do this? You just rebooted your entire universe! You got everyone’s attention with both good and bad content that has had us here at WGI writing about for months! Is this to contend with Marvel’s “X-men vs. Avengers” or what ever they’re calling it??
“Ever since Dan DiDio was handed the reins (along with Jim Lee) over at DC, he’s been making bold, innovative moves that might have scared the hell out of anyone else. At a time in the industry when big events tend to be “Okay, we had Team A fight Team B last year, so this year we’re gonna have Team B fight team C!” Dan has chosen to revitalize lines, reinvent worlds and come at Watchmen head-on. It was, I think, about two years ago that he first mentioned that he was considering the idea, and he’s to be commended for fighting to make this happen.”
Wow J. Michael Straczynski…little passive aggressive don’t you think? I guess you’re still not over that break up with Marvel. Now while his former love is creating another “Summer Blockbuster” it is at least some what original and not a prequel to “The Infinity Gauntlet”. It deals with consequences from other stories and not trying to retell a story, though some would argue it’s “Civil War 2”.
On the other hand, this does have me excited to see what they produce. Why? Because of the artists and writers. I’m currently reading Darwyn Cooke’s “Catwoman” and the art work is blowing me away. Seeing Cooke, Hughes, Jae Lee and Joe Kubert create art work for beloved characters is….well pretty cool.
Only time will tell how well/awful this series will pan out, I just hope they don’t bleed the “Watchmen” cow dry and create something like this:
